You might have seen this one coming since we are a textbook store after all! Textbooks have hundreds upon hundreds of pages, and in most cases, get thrown away after just one semester — what a waste. Instead, you can make an effort to opt for the digital textbook whenever possible. More and more publishers are getting with the times and making their textbooks available in a digital format. This will not only help reduce your environmental impact and paper waste, but it’ll also save you from lugging around all that extra weight. If no digital textbook option exists, then at the very least you can try to resell your book to a student taking the class next semester or recycle it.
Tons of courses have printouts and worksheets for you to print and use as a resource. In some cases, printing these out may be unavoidable. But if you have the option, it’s worth considering if you really need to print out that sheet. You may be able to utilize the material just as well from a tablet screen, computer screen, or you may discover you don’t really need it after all.
Recycle Worksheets and Materials
It’s nearly impossible to go through your college career without being given a ton of paper worksheets and learning materials. Even your tests are eventually handed back to you and likely thrown in the trash can. Another great way that you can have a positive impact on the environment throughout your college experience is by taking the time to make sure all of these worksheets, resources, old tests, and other paper handouts make their way to the recycle bin so that they may be used again.
While buying used isn’t always an option, some professors don’t mind if you use a slightly different version of the textbook for the course. Or in some cases, the textbook doesn’t change from semester to semester. In cases like these, you can buy your textbooks and course materials from other students. This helps reduce waste, save money, and for you to get some money back after you are done with it — win-win-win.
Reusable Beverage Containers
Everyone knows that college students are powered 100% by caffeine. But did you know that more and more coffee shops are allowing the use of refillable coffee mugs? Purchasing and using one of these refillable coffee mugs is an eco-friendly choice that will prevent thousands of plastic coffee cups from making their way to the landfill.
Not a coffee drinker? Making the switch to a reusable water bottle rather than buying plastic ones can be another great way to reduce your carbon footprint during your college career.
